As we get into week two, I would like to shout out Raina Telgemeier's graphic adaptation of Ann M. Martin's The Baby Sitters Club. More particularity Claudia and the Mean Janine. This was always my favorite BSC book, because my name is Janine. I know, but that's all it took when I was a kid. For the record, I am NOTHING like Claudia's sister Janine. I am so thrilled that The BSC is now in graphic form. I think it totally reinvents itself to a whole new generation of readers as well as to graphic novel fans. I am eagerly awaiting the release of every single one. I also really appreciate the black and white pictures, it has that traditional comic appeal. If you are a BSC fan and have not read this adaptation yet, please do so. Also, if you are just a fan of graphic novels in general or Raina's, please read it.
We ordered this one last week -- can't wait to read it! It will be interesting for readers and compare the two versions. Thanks for sharing it and joining the celebration.

I really find that the graphic novel gives the reader a much more visual experience. Having read the series, I created my own images of what I thought the girls looked like and reading Raina's adaptations has been a pleasant surprise. Sometimes when someone else creates an image that is already firm in my head, I become saddened, but this was not the case. Partly because I am a huge fan of Raina.
DeleteI never read the original BSC by Ann Martin because I missed them by a few years. I love Raina's adaptations though! And they are moving like wildfire through our 4th graders, even among the boys.
ReplyDeleteThat's great! Raina is awesome. Have your student's read El Deafo-Cece Bell or Sunny Side Up-Jennifer and Matt Holm. They are both great for fourth grade. I also recently recommended Roller Girl to a fourth grade teacher friend of mine.
